2012 Olympics Prediction : America not in top 5

The upcoming 2012 London Summer Olympics will be a disappointing showing by American Athletics. I predict that we do not finish in the top 5 countries in number of gold medals.

To make a statement like this in 1964 or 1968, when we were first in the medal counts would be thought of as impossible. In fact, with the exception of the 1980 olympics, which we boycotted, we have never been out of the top 3.

In this summer’s Universiade in Shenzhen China, America finished 5th. While this is not a signal of our olympic capabilities, it is a signal of how America seems to be slipping from its greatness in developing superstars of athletics.

Our society has cut every type of physical and academic program in the country. The Universiade is a show of the results of the educational programs around the world. The participants are “in school” or “recent graduates”. The fifth place showing of America is a direct correspondence to the following scores by other measuring bodies.

The scores from the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds trailed their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world’s richest countries. The U.S. students were further behind in math, trailing counterparts in 23 countries.

The three-yearly OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, which compares the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds in 70 countries around the world, ranked the United States 14th out of 34 OECD countries for reading skills, 17th for science and a below-average 25th for mathematics.

The path of our country has been towards complete and uncontrolled capitalism at the expense of every social program. The great scientists, artists and athletes come from these programs. It is the lifeblood of our society and we have cut it off completely.

That is why I make the prediction of an awful showing in the 2012 olympics. We simply are not the culture that creates greatness in anything anymore except for the greatness of greed and money hoarding.

Thank you Mr. George W. Bush.
