Kelloggs Nutrigrain Bars: Love the ad, hate the product.

Kellogg’s is not the kind of company we can ever expect a healthy product to come out of now or in the future. They have a new advertising campaign that is trying to make you believe they are creating healthy products now, but please slow down and take a serious look before you give them their halo.

Here is the television ad : Eating Better All Day

I have to admit I love the ad. It shows better eating choices all day. But the truth is that they are simply trying to make you believe that you can put Nutrigrain bars in the same category as an apple, salad, or strawberry. That is where the advertising lie, the same type of lie you will find in 99% of all TV ads, steps in.

The Nutrigrain bar is simply wheat drenched in corn syrup. It is a candy. You are much better off eating toast with Jam. They are feeding off the whole world’s fear of fat but when you compare a 37 gram nutrigrain bar to a bag of potato chips, you will find that you actually get more dietary fiber (twice the amount) from the bag of chips.

I am not saying that a bag of potato chips is healthy. I am saying that a Nutrigrain bar is not much better than eating a bag of chips.

The second lie in the ad is that a Nutrigrain bar is a meal. The Nutrigrain bar is a tiny 37 grams. That is LESS THAN 1.5 ounces. SMALLER THAN A SINGLE SERVING SIZE POTATO CHIP BAG. Just like a bag of potato chips…it is a snack. This is not something that will sustain or energize you. It is simply a gob of high fructose corn syrup with some whole wheat stuck to it. It is irresponsible for them to call it healthy or call it a meal.

So thank you Kelloggs for the good commerical….even though you did it for the wrong reasons. But no thanks for the Nutrigrain bar. I will not eat it even though you gave it a misleading name (not that nutritious), and gave it a great ad campaign. I will stick to the apples and strawberries….and two slices of whole wheat bread with multiple grains. yummy. You can keep the high fructose corn syrup goo in your factory.
