American Unemployment: The LOG that will break the camel’s back.

America has long been suffering under heavy unemployment. Now the trend is getting critical Our congress has tried a string of ill-conceived attempts to stop the dam from breaking, but their unwillingness to act properly has brought us to this point.

Unemployment is now at critical levels. Over 100 metropolitan areas are over 10% unemployment. A few metropolitan areas have over 30%

Yuma, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area 30.0%
El Centro, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 30.8%

Our nation of 300+ million people is struggling to stay afloat. Here are some examples of what our Congress has done to create jobs.

Send over 350,000 US Citizens to be soldiers in foreign countries. If they were here, the unemployment would be another 1% higher

Make everyone afraid and spent trillions of dollars on homeland security. Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States. Homeland Security employed about 183000 workers 2006. Include the other government organizations and private companies and you are up to over 400,000 people. If we did not have the scare of 911 and homeland security that would mean another 1% unemployment.

So if we had no war and no homeland security, the truth is we would have reached critical mass of Americans out of work! That is why Obama broke his promise to end the war. That is why we cannot bring our troops home. That is why we cannot relax our spending on homeland security and military.

But it is not enough. Here comes the LOG that breaks the camel’s back. The United States Post Office is as outdated as the buggy whip. They are losing billions every year. Not one or two billion, but tens of billions. They have begged money from the government for many years. Now the Post Office has played their ace. They have announced that if they will be laying off 120,000 workers this year.

Their official announcement as printed in the New York Times
: In recent weeks, Mr. Donahoe has been pushing a series of painful cost-cutting measures to erase the agency’s deficit, which will reach $9.2 billion this fiscal year. They include eliminating Saturday mail delivery, closing up to 3,700 postal locations and laying off 120,000 workers — nearly one-fifth of the agency’s work force — despite a no-layoffs clause in the unions’ contracts.

Bush avoided this headache by pumping money into the postal system to delay the inevitable. Obama does not have that luxury, nor do I think he would use it if he did. The Post Office has to adapt to become a viable entity. This is only the first step of the decline of this institution into oblivion. But what are we going to do with another 120,000 unemployed individuals? When you consider that there is one private sector person working for every postal employee, that is almost another 1% unemployment.

This is the iceberg for our titanic economy. Obama and Congress see it coming. Will we spend money we do not have to prop up the post office again? I think that Obama is now realizing that he has made huge mistakes in following the advice of those who asked him to break his campaign promises. I think that he is realizing that from his inactions, he has lost his historical base of support. He missed one of the great opportunities in history to change America to a viable country again.

The truth is that the Bush wars, the Reagan economics, and the fear of the American public are stones dragging us down to economic disaster. We have not invested ANYTHING in our own country. We are an aging giant who can no longer support ourselves.

Answer to our problems? Yes. Bring everyone back. Spend every dollar on infrastructure and private sector technology. Rebuild everything using American steel, American plastics, and American fabrics. We will be back on our feet in a few short years.

Problem to the answer? What candidate is suggesting that solution? ONLY ONE. RON PAUL!
