Heat Index: Example of Science vs. Superstition

Nothing can make a scientist more frustrated than when he/she creates a tool to better the lives of human beings and is immediately labeled a heretic. If there is one attribute of humans from the beginning of time until today that will classify our age as part of the “dark ages of science”, it is the vilification of earnest scientists just because they discover some new truth that demands change.

Two of the most famous are:

Galileo is convicted of heresy because he said the earth revolves around the sun. : Apr 12, 1633: Galileo is convicted of heresy

And more recently:

The Scopes Trial, formally known as The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes and informally known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, was a landmark American legal case in 1925 in which high school science teacher, John Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach evolution in any state-funded school.

In both cases, a scientist made an observation in nature and wrote about it. Other scientists further studied and documented each observation until theories were produced. Theories were then put under endless scrutiny by science until there were not more tests (experiments) that could be done to disprove the theory. At that time, and only at that time, were these theories considered truths. After decades, and indeed sometimes centuries, the superstitious sects on our planet give up their silly arguments and fall into line with science.

Welcome to the dark ages of 2012. Science noted that Heat, as shown by a thermometer is not an accurate index of how the human body reacts to the combination of heat and humidity. They created the HI, better known as the Heat Index to help humans understand what exposure to more specific conditions will do to their body and health. (For example: If the temperature is 98 degrees F, and the relative humidity is 65%, then the heat index is 130. Extreme danger — heat stroke is imminent.) This is useful information because just knowing that it is 98 degrees F outside, you may think it is ok to work outdoors.

Next add the science of global warming. Scientists noted that when an atmosphere has elevated levels of CO2, the relative temperature is greater. They began to measure the CO2 levels and the global temperatures…they found a correlation. They did extensive experiments until they ran out of ways to try to prove their data was wrong. After that they published their findings and made the global CO2 pollution data public.

Just as expected, the superstitious sects in our society jumped up to claim heresy and lies. They produced fraudulent data to support their threats and claims against the scientific establishment.

One of their famous gaffes was by the ever so superstitious Rush Limbaugh who said the Heat Index was a government invention to support global warming. He later retracted this statement after learning that it was invented by Jacksonville meteorologists, WJXT TV-4’s George Winterling, who has been broadcasting the weather for the news station for almost 50 years.

As our dark age eclipses into light, our society will learn to trust science as an independent auditor of our belief system. We will come to see THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD as our only RESPONSIBLE way of determining what is true and what is false.

Yes, this does mean that the idea of “faith” will come to an end. Faith is just another word used by those who wish to control us or to take our money. That word will eventually be replaced completely by the word “hope” which is another way of saying “may we be lucky”.
